I was waiting for someone at dinnertime today so nipped in spoons for a quick pint. Now players would be wary anyway with it being a spoons, but it wouldn't make a blind bit of difference to your average punter who wanted a bit of a dabble on the machine.

I had a tenner on me and hadn't brought my wallet out. Pint of Guinness: £2.20. So I pops a quid into the itBox and no joy on bullseye. So my remaining £1.80 goes in the fruitie (SMTM). A couple of 30p & 50p spins and it's gone. So in goes the fiver. No more than 20 seconds later and thats gone as well.

£6.80. Zip. Nothing. Nada. I mean, just think about that for a minute??? It might not mean a lot when you're hitting £105 tops - but imagine how Joe Public must feel. Thats three more pints gone in 30 seconds. Surely having a state of play like this can only mean the end for machines?? For the people who win regularly to do so, they are relying on people to lose their bit of beer money regularly. But surely all but the stupidest of punters will soon realise it's a mugs game - they only need to lose that £6.80 two or three times before they won't bother touching the things again.

It is a mugs game!! and i have gone past the stage of enjoying playing them. Its just when im on that 6th pint of stella for some stupid, insane reason i want to put all my monies in a machine.

Yeah it is if you don't know what you're doing. The thing is, in the past people might have been able to throw their £2.50 change in the machine and have a bit of entertainment with the chance they might win a little bit of money, or even hit it lucky and get the jackpot. Now it seems theres little chance of even getting a board, never mind winning anything!

Agreed. This coupled with the smoking ban/ reduced volume of playable machines / higher jackpots/ economic downturn (currently only in it's very early stages)/ more pro players/ lower %ages, could very well mean the end. I don't think anything good has come out in the last 6 months.

It's always nice to be able to earn a good tax free rate, although if it stops I don't really care.

it's been said before ,but here goes anyway.
it wouldn't be the worst idea for pubs to put a few 5pounders in.
i'm talking about the type that give a nice size run of course ,joe average would get a nice little play out of for his shrapnel,might even make a few quid now and again.i'm sure they would get more put through them by casuals aswell.you could also get 30-50 quid results.i'm not saying this would be all that beneficial to you guys out there who demand 105 tops and stuff ,but you wouldn't be 200 into one and stressed.hits would be more frequent aswell.
the heat factor would be lessened too for you.

There is a pub 2mins away from my house they had £8 jackpot IJ1 and £8 rollercoaster,this was only like 2years ago,
then last year they got £5 IJ3,£5 vamp and £8 battle axe ustd to love it in there

Don't forget though, £5 jp machines can take the equivelant of jackpot itself to get on the board, admittedly not all the time and yes they can roll big considering, but at the end of the day IT IS better than £10+ for a board.

Totally agree with Rocket. I used to play as much as I could in me spare time but these days its too much of a risk and now I can go weeks without even wanting to go on a fruity.

Another thing, I love a day out playing and as a very casual player who picks a town to have a few beers, tries to make money on machines and enjoys a bit of Ornathology, why would I want to put £10 in a m/c to test the water and see if its playing? Do that on the first 5 machines and you're £50 light already!

I'd rather deposit £50 into my poker account, a gamble which I'm starting to enjoy more and more, and its a game in which you win via skill and judgement, better players have the edge obviously buts it not with emptiers, rips, rods, keys and whatever else people have at their disposal (alledgedly).

Did I mention magnets? :P

Rocket - excellent point you make there.

I've been trying to explain this problem to various numpties on here for ages now - we need mug punters to keep playing the machines we know and love or the hoppers will be permanently empty.

It won't take many £8 boards to put people off for good, and then we really are stuffed.
