Why do some machines automatically pay out when collecting a win?
I had a Most Daunting at Clapham Junction station do that to me, collected a £6 nudge win (only put 50p in it and got on board first spin) and it payed out into the tray without me pressing the collect button.

Other than that collect button being faulty there was one I know which does that- I think it was Cobra Cobana- soon as you collect it pays out.

It wasn't the collect button as I still had 25p worth of credit left, fruit machines normally don't pay out until all credits have been played.

A lot of pubs used to do this round here.
One of the reasons was to stop false non-payment claims. Eg, you could say you had £60 in the bank, then the machine reset and you lost the lot, or it only paid £10 etc.
If the machine auto-pays then the maximum claim anyone can make is the jackpot amount.

Surely they could just check the last banked / win amount by keying the machine to confirm the situation?

It's just a dipswitch setting inside the machines. One particular local operator near me has all their machines set to auto pay - it's a bit of an arse when you're trying to build up a bank...

Another thing that happened to me, I played JTRNR for the first time and had that top streak off it for £61, when I collected the whole lot payed out in one go, but the next time I played the same m/c I had £10 off of it, but dumped £3 at a time when pressing the collect button. Do machines normally do this after a certain amount?

You held button in for too long, love winding up mates when they are on this by holding it in!

i had a red near me that was up some stairs and behind a pillar out of site from the bar, after having a few tops out of it but not really much profit [it was a cobra cobanna] they moved it down the stairs and facing the bar, next time i went in it felt like the whole pub was looking at me, got a top and the lot came out straight away. so i can only assume they moved it too where they can keep an eye on it and got the engineer too switch it too pay and give so they can hear every pound that you win. one of the worst reds so don't bother with it now so they've probably done me a favour anyway, plus i got the feeling the next visit would have been barred :P
