Be careful not get into debt in the first place.

Having said that, Banks are robbing bastards.

DO NOT GIVE THEM THE OPPORTUNITY.
CANCEL ALL STANDING ORDERS AND DIRECT DEBITS.

This is the major reason for going overdrawn, ie. Getting Days mixed up or the direct debit comes out before wage day.
Pay money in CASH at a counter at YOUR convenience, not theirs.

i've actually signed up to http://www.bank-smart.com (or co.uk) who do all the forms and stuff for you, but charge 10% of what you get back. I think I must be owed £500 and dont have the time at the moment, so i am quite happy with htat, if they pull through!

I would like to vote this as the most useful post since this site began!

If every member does it I reckon this forum would make well over £100k?

Would be fun to see....

Get writing them letters you debt ridden bastards! - I have hahaha

god, who even thinks of setting up a whole company based around this?!

I have done this already too, about 5 months back, think I got 250 back from a claim of 400. I sent them a list of the charges I had recieved and added a few that werent true/duplicates, I suspect they get so many of these they may not even check!

Has anybody who has succesfully done this had trouble with the bank afterwards? I really want to do this but can't be bothered with my account being shut down and having to set a new one up.

bowie they wont/cant shut your acc down, as they have been breaking banking law. banks have 4 working weeks to respond to your letter and give u an answer, if your not happy with it then you can file a claim at your local crown court, which they MUST either defend against or give out of coyrt settlement, bbc said that NO bank has chosen to defend themselves in court.

A few banks have been rumoured to close accounts when people get on to them about this. It's not as if their ethical in the first place so be careful. They've only got me once but I went on holiday the next day so couldn't be bothered with it.

bang on.

No bank will dare go to court. If they lose they set a precedent costing the industry billions. fear of this stops them.

True about the closing of accounts. All they letter is doing is asking for proof of costs ie. showing how the cost comes to £35 for going overdrawn - if they cannot prove it then the charges are unfair and unlawful - hence the money should be returned to your account.

I sent mine off last week totalling £765 for the past 5 years.

what are you lot on about?! why WOULD they shut down your account, and on what basis? They don't go giving away their customers just because you write them a complaint/query!
