why are we getting so much spam?

Each time a member joins, I have to activate the account. This is a good way of filtering out the dodgy acccounts - its usually pretty easy to tell which are bots and which are genuine.
I turned off this option last week, for testing.
It clearly doesnt work, So ill re-activate my normal activation method.
