...why a fruit machine is called a fruit machine? no? well here is the answer anyway.
in america, when gambling was outlawed existing slot machines were recalibrated to offer bubble gum as prizes. if you lined up three cherries you got cherry bubble gum, three melons for melon bubble gum etc.
the bell and the bar were chosen from various logos of the company which made the gum.
here endeth the lesson.

lol the term fruit machine is probably dated now just looking at my barcrest revolution the only 'fruit' symbol on it is melons
