Ok, so in the course of playing fruities i have had the odd Jersey or Isle Of Man pound coin, but on friday paid the visa bill at the bank and in the change i got a pound coin with a tail on both sides. They are the same way up on both sides and line up perfectly, and it has the writing round the edge. Just wondered if any one else has had one before.

i think you can safely say that you have been passed a counterfeit coin.

I've never had one before, but if it turns out to be genuine, it could be worth a fortune.

I used to collect stamps when I was a kid, and the most innocuos mistakes on stamps could be worth a fortune. Things like the silhouette of the Queen's head turned back to front could turn a 20p stamp into a £2,000 windfall.

Don't want to get your hopes up or anything, but you might want to check out some numismatic websites to see if anyone has ever encountered it before. Also, if there is a local coin/stamp shop near you, pop in there and see what they have to say about it. Whatever you do, don't stick it into a machine (unless you find it's forged / worthless !)

Im sure that without teh queens head its not classed as legal tender?? maybe wrong

i don't think there is any question that it is not legal tender. interesting that the milling seems complete; so it can't be a bodge job by cementing two horizontal halves.

it must be a gambler's coin which somehow got into circulation.

Surely if it came from the Mint though, then it is legal tender?

but the dies don't work like that. there is exactly 0% chance that the Royal mint would cast any coin with two reverses.

if by some extraordinary quirk they did then you (S&S) could make a pretty penny from richard & judy, trisha and other things i'd rather be watching than stuck at work with a stinking hangover.

I'm not claiming to be an expert on coinage, but if they can occasionally make duff stamps, what's to say a duff coin couldn't slip through the net too?

i had a dodgy pint during a FC WU crawl.

all legal tender has rigourous checks and dies are mechanised. i would be surprised if even the most senior official at the mint could cast a coin as described on a whim. that said i do want one.

Coins are pressed using the same templates every time so it is unlikey to be from the mint.

Stamps are a completely different method and the mistakes that make them valuable can be anything from a miss print in the picture or wrong postage value marked up.

As someone said earlier you should keep it for Heads or Tails coin flips. Just dont let anyone called Rodney call for you
