Weird note acceptor related problem

Was waiting for a train with a mate who stuck a £20 into a bubble cab out of boredom, he won £5 off the first £5 he put in.. pressed collect, and it said "IOU £5 call attendant" (wasn't empty obviously or it wudnt have accepted the £20 otherwise)... so he plugged the machine, and when turned back on, paid out his £5 bank, but the £15 note credit had totally vanished.

So what happened to this £15, was it registered as credits with nothing won, or had it literally vanished into thin air?

Regards

it clearly was empty, maybe a problem that the changer on the machine always stays on.....i have this on a cops n robbers that works that i still have.....or the machine your mate put a note in had been robbed and the person who did it didnt key it after they had done it

yeah mate like i say, it was like the hopper malfunctioned the first time, as it didn't even try and pay anything out, it just said call attendant. then as soon as it was plugged and turned back on, it spat the £5 out straight away with no hassle.

I appreciate it's quite confusing, but that's exactly what prompted me to post this here.
