I was in a wetherspoon in Kirkby, Merseyside visiting a friend. Since I had no change I put a £20 into the note acceptor, it started to churn away and said note mech error, so I went to the bar and told them. They took my name and number, and said that the enginerr would be called out and when he came, he would find the money and leave it for you to return and collect.

I gave them a few days, and called back only to be told that the engineer had been out and couldn't find the note , so I left it a few more days and they still said that nothing had been found, and since then the machine had been changed??

Despite the shocking customer service I recieved in the interim period (which wetherspoon are dealing with, thankfully), I just wondering what the legal/otherwise stance was on trying to get the £20 back.

It had gone in the machine and cctv shows it. I have been told by the manager that it isn't her responsabilty. what do you think?

It isn`t unknown for swallowed notes to be spat out at random hours after the event!
More likely a light-fingered engineer (usually on crap pay).
Put it down to experience and use coins in future.

I think the light fingerered engineer may be the most likely reason. And yeh you are right, a harsh lesson to learn that coins are better than notes.

Sadly, I think you have no chance of getting it back.

This has happened to me in the past.

It was probably the engineer who had it away.

Also agree with previous post that the machine can spit it out at random later on.

Tip: In the past, if I have had a note chewed, plugging the machine sometimes gave it back to me.

if it wasnt after about 5pm or a sunday, id have done the callout myself, and waited next to the machine.

if you ring their head office and or send them a letter, they will probably reply, but i wouldnt expect them to give you the money back.

I was in a walkabout in central liverpool and put a £20 note in a quiz.

It turned out that not only the inside cash door but also the top door was open. I did try and regain the money by physically removing the hopper, but it had £2 in it.

I then went to the bar saying i put £20 in and it gave no credit, demonstrating that the top door was open. they STILL didnt believe it and said i need to contact the company, generally meaning no chance.

Didnt even bother trying for it.
