I know of an arcade near me which is closing within the next 6 months! It's been there for years! Neptunes Palace (Gorleston) for those who are local to me

Today for example, was in Scarborough with the GF down the sea front, happily wasting a few quid on stuff like grabber machines and the pac man slots, that you know are going to rob you blind but you don't mind as they provide a wee bit of entertainment.

I've never seen it so bad, the main arcade was so dead that the 2 lifesize noel edmonds cardboard cutouts were stood next to eachother, probably for company.

Fantasy forest has 3 floors, one for fruits, one for pool air hockey and various other things, and the top floor has bowling, if i was honest there was probably as many staff members as customers, not counting the levitating baseball capped morons of course, this is late summer remember with some schools still not off.

The other smaller arcades were just dead, not a lot else to say, apart from when i was getting change in one of them the change man was reading his final demand for rent.

The recession is going to hit arcades a lot harder than many people will expect, mark my words, i wouldn't be surprised if 25% of arcades are shut by Feb 2010, how much people play is actually irrelevant given that any profits they would expect are now going to be taken away by leccy bills.

Not saying that all hi-tecs are on 72% JG.

A friend of mine who isn't banned has witnessed 3 machines with door open after reset and each one said 72%. However given that there are only about 6 hi-tecs between the two sites it wouldn't surprise me.

I expect the lo-tecs and gg's are still on 88-92%.

I think, to refer back to my previous (loooonnnggg) post, this is quite a common reaction to a closing arcade.

Seeing a pub go out of business (particularly a village or local one) is a bit of a shame but I'm sure most of us would walk past an arcade owner if he had gone bust and was begging on the street without a seconds sympathy.

Any business that can treat their customers with the sort of contempt that most arcades seem to deserves to go under.

Yeah fuck em all. Like we give a shit(scruffy cunts)I remember being in southport(lings is it?)playing multi nudges/superstitions, played one arcade moved to the other when about 6 bouncers threatened me and my mate wi a shoeing if we went in.We went to go in anyway and they just stood blockin doors like twats,so in the end we gave up and did two in their blackpool arcade.(dumb cunts)

RUDE,i agree there does'nt seem to be many decent operators about anymore ,but there are still some, and they are mainly single venue owners.................not like them bastards ,nobles for instance.
some of these places are a damn sight fairer than the chains and i think it's a shame to see them shut,i would sooner lose a few quid(once every so often)in one of these places than walk out of a nobles /showboat a single pound down.
what you say about the small time granny getting better treatment than a big spending younger player is of course true ................cuppa a tea deary?......................where as you're 100 into a fookin bfm and all you get is stern looks.
you're ideas on the s16 side of things however needs clarity.
the industry had been in decline for several years, then these things appeared(my personal opinion is that they should have been stamped on at the start),now; they gave the operators a bit of a lifeline :| so to speak.
some weeks they'd take loads ,BUT QUITE OFTEN they would actually make a loss and continue running over 100 percent for a while ( i know ours have done many times),at the end of the day though, s16 did make the difference to a declining industry, while they lasted.
with s16 gone and replaced with b3 the player base has dwindled away, the machines however still cost the same ,and you have to have them to compete with mr b'stard operator up the road.

as for poor treatment in arcades i.e barrings , i'm sure it happens nationwide ,but not any where local to me, i suppose a lot of this is down to the ammount of machine crime in the last few years though,so blame them blinkin' _arb_ brothers amongst others.

The small time granny loses their pension each week stuffing it into the machines (they scare me how fast they pump the cash in for a loss). Can't blame them being nice to Mrs Bloggs/Smith for giving them cash, i'd make the dears a cuppa myself if i was the boss.

In past year, 4 nearby pubs have closed including 2 closest to me and one of the busiest nearby pubs has new landlord as they weren't making money recently (2 other pubs have changed landlords in last year).

The way things are going, not going to be many pubs left, expect at least half nearby to close within next 2 years (increased cost of ale, the stupid smoking ban, crap unplayable bandits with hostile landlords if you win above a fiver, e.t.c.).

I was speaking to a friend who is a manager of the Bar Risa / jongeleurs, he went to a meeting a few weeks ago where the big boss has said they have been put on a 6 month notice of the whole chain of Bar Risa'a, Jonguleurs and walkabouts and another chain of pubs that I cant remember will close if they dont have there best 6 months in the last 4 years. I cant see that happening with the smoking ban etc, he said that alot of this was down to the fruits getting done through the changers, along with smoking ban and less people out of a night.
