You don't necessarily fill out the p46 your firm may just ask for your date of birth and NI number and ask you if you've got another job, had another job, ie why no p45? It's a simple form 1st job this tax year = 810L Got another job or pension = BR Had another job but this is now your only job = 81...

No P45 means you fill in a P46,
