if you can remove it ok, have a look underneath and make sure theres no bubbling on the green circuit board, look for any caps that are bulging (if you find any they need replacing). does this machine have a reel driver board or is it all copntained in the mainboard, sorry but not familiar with that...

do as previous poster said, mark the reels and swap them to see if it changes. sound like a wiring fault or bad connection somewhere as it changed when you cleaned it.
