Look at the sensor on the £1 tube then put the machine into test mode and onto switch test press the sensor in and if you dont see a response on the display u know its faulty and as for not taking 50p the machine is so old it wont unless you upgrade the coin mech.

change the sensor on the pound tube with one of the token sensors or you can first move the pound sensor up over the tube so that its not in the hole on the tube. try that first
